-
Thug Life Imitates Art
-

-
With songs like Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z...and The Streetz
- R Deathrow, rapper TUPAC SHAKUR waxes graphic on the violence
- of urban life. But last week it was Shakur himself who was a
- victim of the behavior he often glorifies. The 23-year-old,
- who has the tattoo THUG LIFE emblazoned across his torso, was
- attacked as he entered a Manhattan recording studio late at
- night. Shakur was shot five times and relieved of $45,000 in
- cash and jewelry in what police described as a random robbery
- but Shakur called a setup. Meanwhile, two days after the attack,
- Shakur was convicted of sexually assaulting a young woman in
- a New York City hotel last year but was acquitted of sodomizing
- her. He could still face up to seven years in prison.

-
A Pair of Unpairings
-

-
Beware the celebrity couple whose members vehemently deny their
- uncoupling. Last week RICHARD GERE and CINDY CRAWFORD--who
- for months have expended a suspicious amount of energy debunking
- break-up rumors--announced that they have separated. Last
- spring Mr. and Mrs. Gere purchased a full-page ad in the Times
- of London confirming their commitment to each other. Now taking
- over the role of couple-strenuously-rebutting-not-implausible-separation-rumors:
- MR. AND MRS. MICHAEL JACKSON. Tabloids reported that the seemingly
- mismatched pair will nullify their seven-month marriage. Spokesmen
- for Jackson and his wife Lisa Marie Presley denied the gossip.
- The latter has children from a previous marriage, and a publicist
- explained that "they are like a lot of couples who work and
- have children--they're not always in the same place at the
- same time." Lisa Marie then declared that she and Michael are
- "very much in love."

-
SEEN & HEARD
-

-
In her new book, On the Edge: The Clinton Presidency, ELIZABETH
- DREW claims that as co-chairman of the Clinton Inaugural, TV
- producer Harry Thomason suggested changing the presidential
- oath. Thomason denied this and threatened to sue, but Drew adamantly
- stood by her assertion. Last week Drew admitted she could not
- afford a lawsuit and agreed to delete the statement from future
- printings of the book.

-
The party is officially over for L.A.'s most celebrated purveyor
- of fun times. Hollywood madam HEIDI FLEISS was convicted of
- running a call-girl ring and faces up to six years in prison.
- Fleiss reacted to the verdict by throwing her head on the defense
- table.
